'First I wish to acknowledge how grateful I am to the Naval Board in Melbourne for my appointment to Shropshire and to Vice-Admiral Sir John Collins KBE, CB for his invariable kindness and consideration.

On assuming command I found very quickly that, thanks to my predecessors, I was blessed with a complement that any Captain would be proud and fortunate to command.

Stan Nicholls' story, as yet not seen by me, cannot fail to provide interesting reading.

Glory be to God for the number of Old Shropshire's still alive to enjoy the fruits of their labour.'
